Hemp Paper vs. Wood Pulp: What Is the Difference?

Hemp paper uses fibre derived from industrial hemp; wood-pulp paper uses fibre derived from wood. That is the reliable starting difference. It does not tell you the complete formulation, processing method, thickness, colour, certification, performance, or environmental impact of a finished sheet.
For a useful comparison, identify the specific fibre source, plant fraction, blend percentage, processing description, dimensions, and evidence behind any quality or sustainability claim. Do not use “hemp” or “wood” as a shortcut for taste, burn behaviour, health, safety, or overall environmental superiority.

Compare the actual fibre inputs
“Hemp paper” is broader than it first appears. Industrial hemp stems contain long bast fibres in the outer portion and shorter woody-core material inside. Reviews of industrial hemp for papermaking evaluate bast pulp, core pulp, whole-stalk pulp, and mixtures because their fibre characteristics differ.
Wood pulp is also a family, not one uniform ingredient. Hardwood and softwood fibres differ in morphology, and papermakers may blend them to meet the requirements of a particular sheet.
Ask five questions:
- What plant or species supplied the fibre?
- Which plant fraction was used?
- Is the sheet made from one pulp or a blend?
- Is the pulp virgin, recycled, or mixed?
- Is the percentage of each fibre stated?
Good material description
“Paper made with a specified blend of hemp bast pulp and softwood pulp; blend ratio shown in the technical sheet.”
Weak material description
“Premium natural hemp-style eco paper.”
The weak version does not confirm that hemp fibre is present, how much is present, or which claim “eco” is trying to make.
Separate source, processing, and colour
Fibre source is one field. Pulping, refining, bleaching, colouring, coating, additives, and sheet formation are other fields.
A peer-reviewed study of filter-paper handsheets tested mixtures of hemp bast and softwood pulp at defined beating levels. Its findings show why formulation and processing must stay attached to performance results. A result from one experimental sheet is not a universal property of every paper carrying the same plant name.
Use this three-part description:
- Source: hemp bast, hemp core, hardwood pulp, softwood pulp, or another named input.
- Processing: bleached, unbleached, coloured, refined, coated, or otherwise specified.
- Sheet: basis weight, thickness, dimensions, porosity, or other relevant measured fields.
Brown paper is not automatically hemp paper. White paper is not automatically wood pulp. Appearance can support a product photo; it cannot replace the material specification.
Treat performance claims as product-specific
Claims such as stronger, thinner, slower, smoother, or more uniform require a defined comparison and a test method. Fibre morphology influences paper properties, but the finished result also depends on the pulp blend, refining, basis weight, additives, forming, and converting process.

For empty pre-rolled cones, also verify total length, opening and tip dimensions, seam construction, tip material, and included quantity. A fibre label cannot answer whether the formed product fits a particular holder, loader, package, or machine.

Keep environmental claims inside a boundary
Hemp is a legitimate nonwood papermaking resource, and published research examines its fibre characteristics and industrial potential. That fact does not establish that every hemp paper has a lower overall impact than every wood-pulp paper.
A defensible lifecycle comparison would define:
- cultivation or forest-management assumptions;
- yield and the plant fraction actually used;
- transport distances;
- pulping, energy, water, and chemical inputs;
- manufacturing scale and waste;
- product lifespan; and
- the realistic end-of-life route.
Wood-pulp paper can also carry recycled-content or forest-sourcing certifications. Hemp-containing paper can use virgin fibre, blends, and different processing routes. Compare the evidence for the specific products rather than awarding a halo based on the crop name.
Appropriate claim
“This sheet contains hemp bast fibre according to the supplier specification.”
Overstated claim
“Hemp makes this product universally sustainable.”
The first claim has a narrow scope and a document to check. The second would require a much larger environmental assessment.
Use a seven-field buying checklist
Before choosing between hemp and wood-pulp paper products, record:

Is hemp paper always 100% hemp?
No. Hemp paper can be made from different hemp stem fractions or blended with other pulps. Check the supplier's composition statement.
Is wood-pulp paper always bleached?
No. Fibre source and bleaching status are separate attributes. Wood-pulp papers can be bleached, unbleached, coloured, or otherwise processed.
Is hemp paper automatically more environmentally friendly?
Not as a universal conclusion. Environmental performance depends on cultivation, pulping, transport, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life assumptions for the products being compared.
Can paper colour identify the fibre source?
No. Colour is affected by raw material, pulping, bleaching, dyes, coatings, and other formulation choices. Use a written material specification.
