MOQ vs. Pack Size: What Wholesale Buyers Should Check

No suitable new industry event met today’s relevance and verification rules, so this article answers a current evergreen wholesale question instead.

MOQ and pack size are not the same number. Pack size describes how many items are inside one selling unit. Minimum order quantity describes the smallest quantity a supplier will accept. A supplier may also use a case pack, minimum order value or volume-price tier. Check all four before comparing offers.

Quick answer

  • Pack size: how many items are inside one pack or case.
  • MOQ: the fewest units, packs or cases the supplier will accept.
  • Order minimum: the minimum total value required for the order.
  • Order increment: the multiple in which quantities must be added.
  • Price tier: the quantity required to unlock a stated unit price.
Supplier term Question to ask Common mistake
Pack size How many individual items are inside? Treating one pack as one item
MOQ Is the minimum measured in items, packs or cases? Comparing unlike quantities
Order minimum Is there also a dollar threshold? Meeting the MOQ but not checkout rules
Price tier Which quantity unlocks this price? Quoting the lowest price without its condition

Start with the unit you can actually count

A wholesale page may show a price per item, per pack or per case. The first job is to identify the base unit.

Write the offer in one sentence:

> One case contains __ packs. Each pack contains __ items. The minimum order is __ cases.

If the sentence cannot be completed from the page, ask the supplier before calculating anything. A neat price table cannot rescue an undefined unit.

Good comparison

“Supplier A requires two cases. Each case contains ten 20-count packs, so the opening order contains 400 items.”

Bad comparison

“Supplier A has an MOQ of two.”

Two what? Items, packs, cases and pallets lead to very different storage conversations.

Calculate the opening commitment, not only unit price

The lowest unit price is not automatically the lowest-risk offer. Calculate the money and space committed at the minimum order.

Use these four figures:

  1. total individual items received;
  2. merchandise cost at the required quantity;
  3. estimated landed cost, including freight and applicable duties; and
  4. weeks or months of inventory at a conservative sales rate.

Shopify distinguishes supplier MOQ from economic order quantity: one is the supplier’s floor, while the other is the quantity that makes sense for the buyer’s inventory economics. That distinction matters when a discount requires more stock than the business can move comfortably.

Useful boundary: a higher MOQ may suit a proven fast-moving item with stable storage conditions.

Poor fit: the same MOQ may be risky for a new product, limited cash, uncertain demand or storage-sensitive paper goods.

Ask whether variants share the minimum

An MOQ may apply to the whole order, one SKU, each size, each color or each custom design. Never assume variants can be mixed.

Ask:

  • Can different variants be combined to meet the MOQ?
  • Does every variant have its own case-pack rule?
  • Is custom packaging subject to a separate minimum?
  • Must reorders follow the same quantity?
  • Are samples credited toward a later purchase?

This is where a friendly “MOQ 500” can quietly become “500 of every version.” Mathematics loves a surprise entrance.

Compare offers with one normalized worksheet

Put every supplier into the same columns:

  • base selling unit;
  • items per pack;
  • packs per case;
  • minimum cases;
  • total items at MOQ;
  • price at that quantity;
  • freight estimate;
  • lead time;
  • variant-mixing rule; and
  • defect, shortage and cancellation terms.

Do not fill missing cells with guesses. Mark them “not confirmed” and ask. A blank cell is more honest—and usually cheaper—than confident fiction.

Before placing a wholesale order

  • [ ] I know whether the price is per item, pack or case.
  • [ ] I converted the MOQ into total individual items.
  • [ ] I checked any dollar minimum and order increment.
  • [ ] I know which quantity unlocks the advertised price.
  • [ ] I confirmed whether variants may be mixed.
  • [ ] I estimated landed cost and storage needs.
  • [ ] I checked lead time, shortage and cancellation terms.
  • [ ] I am not buying excess inventory only to make the unit price look prettier.

FAQ

Is MOQ the same as case pack?

Not always. A case pack describes how many units are packed together. MOQ describes the minimum quantity accepted. A supplier may require several cases.

Is MOQ the same as minimum order value?

No. MOQ is normally a quantity; a minimum order value is a money threshold. Some suppliers use both.

Does a lower MOQ always mean a better deal?

No. It reduces opening inventory risk, but the unit price or shipping cost may be higher. Compare total landed cost and likely sell-through.

Can buyers negotiate MOQ?

Sometimes, especially for a first order or standard product, but terms depend on the supplier and production setup. Ask what changes if the quantity changes rather than assuming the lowest tier still applies.

If you are comparing larger quantities, review ConeBarn’s wholesale information and confirm the exact pack, case and order terms before committing.
